How the ISM route shapes IB maths

The route into the DP
ISM runs the full IB continuum, so students arrive in the Diploma Programme from the MYP rather than from IGCSE. That produces a different starting point in maths, and it is worth being precise about the difference.
What an MYP background gives, and what it does not
MYP students are usually stronger at investigation, communication and framing a problem — which pays off directly in the Internal Assessment. What they more often lack is raw algebraic speed, because the MYP does not drill procedure the way IGCSE does. In AA HL that shows up as correct thinking executed too slowly.

Course choice and what to watch

The fix is narrower than it looks
Because the conceptual foundation is usually sound, the work is fluency: manipulating expressions without hesitating, recognising standard forms, and rebuilding non-calculator confidence for Paper 1. This is one of the more satisfying gaps to close, because progress is visible within weeks.
The IA advantage
A continuum background tends to produce better Internal Assessments — students already know how to pose and pursue a question. The support they need is mathematical depth for the level rather than help with the writing.

Where we usually start

With an MYP background the concepts are usually in place, so we start with speed: manipulating expressions without hesitation, recognising standard forms, and rebuilding the automatic algebra that HL assumes. This is measurable within weeks, which also does a lot for confidence.
Turning the IA advantage into marks
Continuum students generally frame a good question. What they most often need is depth: making sure the mathematics used is genuinely at the level, that the reflection is analytical rather than descriptive, and that the exploration goes somewhere rather than stopping at a calculation.

IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretation, at Standard and Higher Level, plus IB Physics, the Internal Assessment in both subjects, SAT Math and Bocconi admissions preparation.
Can lessons be in Italian?

Yes. I am fluent in English, Italian and Croatian, and a lesson can run in any of the three or move between them. For students examined in English but more comfortable reasoning in Italian, that flexibility is usually the fastest route to understanding.
My child came through the MYP — is that a disadvantage in AA?

Not a disadvantage, a different profile. MYP students usually arrive with better investigation and communication skills than their IGCSE peers, which shows in the Internal Assessment. What they typically lack is algebraic speed, because the MYP does not drill procedure. That gap closes faster than the reverse one, and it closes with practice rather than with re-teaching.
