The route into the DP: St Louis takes students through the British curriculum and IGCSE before the Diploma Programme, with the upper years on a dedicated campus. As at any IGCSE school, students reach AA with solid algebra and a working habit of laying out method.
A large cohort changes the maths: With one of the larger DP cohorts in Milan, maths sets are big enough that teaching is necessarily pitched at the middle. That works well for the middle and less well at both ends: the student who needs one concept re-explained slowly, and the student who is ready to be pushed past the syllabus, are the two who benefit most from one-to-one time.

Course choice and what to watch

Where marks actually go: Across large cohorts the pattern is consistent — marks are lost to unshown method, to rounding and units under time pressure, and to Paper 1 non-calculator fluency that was never properly rebuilt after IGCSE. None of these are conceptual gaps, which is why they respond quickly to targeted work.
The Bocconi crossover: A meaningful share of students at Milan schools apply to Bocconi, where 24 of the 50 admissions-test questions are mathematics drawn from a syllabus that overlaps heavily with AA. Preparing for both at once is more efficient than treating them as separate projects.

Where we usually start

Rebuilding Paper 1 without a calculator: The first thing we usually test is non-calculator fluency, because it decays quietly after IGCSE and only shows up under exam timing. A few weeks of short, frequent drills restores it, and it lifts Paper 1 marks more reliably than any amount of additional content teaching.
Working with, not against, a large class: Because sets are big, the most valuable use of one-to-one time is the specific thing the class moved past too quickly. Sessions follow the school scheme of work deliberately, so the student arrives at each lesson already understanding what their teacher covered that week rather than running a parallel syllabus.

Yes. I am fluent in English, Italian and Croatian, and a lesson can run in any of the three or move between them. For students examined in English but more comfortable reasoning in Italian, that flexibility is usually the fastest route to understanding.

The class moves quickly — can you keep pace with the school?

Yes, and deliberately so. Sessions follow the school’s scheme of work rather than a separate syllabus of my own, so we are consolidating what was taught that week rather than teaching something unrelated. Where the class has moved past a topic too fast, we go back to it without falling behind the current one.
