How the ASM route shapes IB maths

The route into the DP: ASM runs an American curriculum with the Diploma Programme available inside it, which means DP maths students arrive from a US-style background rather than from IGCSE or the MYP.
The specific gap this creates: US curricula generally cover trigonometry and algebra thoroughly but treat formal proof lightly, and calculus arrives later and faster. Students often reach AA HL comfortable with computation and unprepared for the expectation that they justify a result. Proof is the topic where this shows up first and most sharply.

Course choice and what to watch

SAT and IB at the same time: ASM students are more likely than most to be sitting the SAT alongside the Diploma. The two reward different things — the SAT rewards speed and pattern recognition, AA rewards depth and justification — and preparing for them in the same session is usually a mistake. They are better run as separate tracks with a shared foundation.
University routes: Students applying to US universities need the SAT and a strong DP; those applying in the UK or Italy need neither the SAT nor the same subject mix. Getting the maths course choice right depends on which of those routes is actually being pursued, and that conversation is worth having in the first year, not the second.

Where we usually start

Building proof from the ground up: Proof is normally the first serious work. Not because these students are weaker, but because a US curriculum rarely asks for it, so the skill has never been built. We start with what a complete argument looks like, then work through induction and the standard HL proof forms until they stop feeling like a foreign genre.
Keeping SAT and IB on separate tracks: If the SAT is also in play, we plan it as its own block with its own timing rather than blending it into DP sessions. The two exams reward opposite instincts, and students who prepare for them simultaneously tend to get slower at the SAT and sloppier at the IB.

Do you tutor students from American School of Milan?

Which maths courses do you cover?

IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretation, at Standard and Higher Level, plus IB Physics, the Internal Assessment in both subjects, SAT Math and Bocconi admissions preparation.

Can lessons be in Italian?

Yes. I am fluent in English, Italian and Croatian, and a lesson can run in any of the three or move between them. For students examined in English but more comfortable reasoning in Italian, that flexibility is usually the fastest route to understanding.

Should my child sit the SAT as well as the IB?

It depends entirely on where they are applying. US universities generally expect it; UK and Italian universities largely do not, and Bocconi accepts it as an alternative to its own test. If the SAT is needed, it should be planned as a separate block rather than folded into DP sessions, because the two exams reward opposite instincts.
