Yes — IB Physics HL is one of the more demanding Diploma subjects, but the difficulty is concentrated and predictable rather than spread evenly across the course. HL covers the same five themes as SL with 240 teaching hours against 150, and almost all of that extra time goes into depth rather than new topics. Students who struggle almost always struggle for one of three reasons: shaky algebra, treating physics as something to memorise, or leaving the Scientific Investigation until it is too late to fix.
What “hard” actually means here
Physics HL is rarely hard in the way students expect. The individual ideas are mostly reasonable; what catches people out is that questions ask you to combine two or three of them under time pressure, in a context you have not seen before.
The IB Physics course runs 240 teaching hours at HL against 150 at SL. That gap is not 90 hours of extra topics bolted on — it is the same five themes taken further, with more mathematics and longer multi-step problems. Theme A carries the most teaching hours at both levels, which is worth knowing when you plan revision.
The second thing that makes it hard is the maths dependency. You need to rearrange equations confidently, work with trigonometry and logarithms, read gradients and intercepts off graphs, and handle uncertainties. Students taking Mathematics AI SL alongside Physics HL feel this most, because the algebraic fluency the physics assumes is not being drilled anywhere else in their timetable. That is a solvable problem, but only if you notice it early.
The five themes, and where HL goes deeper
The current syllabus, with first assessment in 2025, is organised into five themes rather than the old topic-and-options structure:
- A — Space, time and motion. Kinematics, forces, momentum, energy, and an introduction to special relativity. The largest theme by teaching hours.
- B — The particulate nature of matter. Thermal physics, gas laws, and the particle model.
- C — Wave behaviour. Oscillations, wave properties, superposition and standing waves.
- D — Fields. Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, treated as one idea rather than three separate ones.
- E — Nuclear and quantum physics. Atomic structure, radioactive decay, fission and fusion, wave–particle duality and the photoelectric effect.
The thematic structure is deliberate. Energy, fields and uncertainty recur across themes so that you meet the same concept in different contexts, and the harder exam questions test exactly that transfer. Students who revise theme by theme in isolation tend to be surprised by questions that sit across two of them.
Where marks are actually lost
After enough past papers, the pattern is consistent, and it is rarely the hardest content:
- Treating physics as recall. A student can state Newton’s second law and still not know which body to apply it to. Definitions earn a small number of marks; setting up the situation earns most of them.
- Never sanity-checking. An answer of 3×109 m s−1 should stop you dead. Checking units and orders of magnitude before moving on catches a surprising share of lost marks.
- Data and graph questions. Paper 1B is entirely data-based, and gradients, intercepts, error bars and uncertainties are examinable skills in their own right. They are also the most trainable part of the course.
- Extended response structure. Long-answer questions reward a connected argument. Writing everything you know about a topic scores badly compared with answering the question that was asked, in order.
How the papers are structured
For first assessment 2025, the external assessment is two papers:
- Paper 1 is worth 36% and comes in two booklets sat together. Paper 1A is multiple choice — 40 questions at HL, 30 at SL. Paper 1B is data-based, worth 20 marks. HL students get 2 hours; SL students get 1 hour 30.
- Paper 2 is worth 44% and mixes data-based questions, short answers and at least one extended response. HL runs 2 hours 30; SL runs 1 hour 30.
- The Scientific Investigation is the remaining 20%.
Two consequences follow. First, Paper 1 gives you well under two minutes a question at HL, so pace is a skill you have to train rather than hope for. The Scientific Investigation is 20%, and it is the most controllable mark
The internal assessment is a single scientific investigation of around 3,000 words, marked by your teacher and moderated by the IB. Roughly half the available marks sit in conclusion and evaluation — the part most students rush in the final week.
That distribution should change how you plan it. A modest experiment analysed carefully, with honest uncertainty treatment and a genuine evaluation of what limited the result, outscores an ambitious experiment written up in a hurry. Choose a research question you can actually vary and measure, take more data than feels necessary, and leave real time for the analysis.

Should you take HL at all?
Difficulty is the wrong test, in the same way it is the wrong test when choosing between Maths AA and AI. The right question is what your intended degree requires.
Engineering, physics and many natural-science courses at competitive universities either require Physics HL or effectively expect it. If you are heading that way, HL is not optional and the question becomes how to support it rather than whether to take it. If you are not, and Physics HL is competing with a subject closer to your intended path, the honest answer is that a 7 in the right SL subject is usually worth more than a 5 in a HL subject you did not need.

What a 7 actually requires
Four habits separate the students who get there:
- Fix the algebra first. If rearranging an equation takes conscious effort, every physics problem costs you twice. This is the highest-return thing to repair early, and it is repairable in weeks.
- Work problems without notes open. Reading worked solutions produces recognition, not ability. Attempt first, fail, then check.
- Use past papers as teaching material. Start them far earlier than feels comfortable and use them to find out what you do not know, rather than saving them to confirm what you do.
- Drill the data booklet. Knowing where a relationship lives, and which form of it you need, saves minutes across a paper.
