The Math section is 44 questions in 70 minutes, split into two modules of 22 questions and 35 minutes each. Only 40 of those 44 are scored — two questions in each module are unscored pretest items, and there is no way to tell which. The section is adaptive between modules: how you do on the first decides whether the second is the easier or the harder version, and only the harder version gives access to the top of the 200–800 range. Because a wrong answer costs exactly what a blank costs, there is never a reason to leave a question unanswered.
The shape of the section
Two modules, 22 questions and 35 minutes each. That works out at roughly 95 seconds a question, though the questions are not equally demanding: short algebra items need to be banked quickly so the multi-step ones have room.
About three quarters of the questions are multiple choice with four options. The rest are student-produced responses, where you type the answer yourself. That distinction matters more than it looks — on a student-produced response there are no options to work backwards from and no partial credit for being close, so the arithmetic has to survive contact with the keyboard.
Math is scored 200 to 800 and is exactly half of the 1600 total.
The adaptive part, and why the first module matters more
This is the piece most students misunderstand. Everyone sits the same first module. Your performance on it routes you to one of two second modules: a lower-difficulty version or a higher-difficulty one.
The consequence is that the ceiling on your score is set before you begin the second module. The easier second module cannot produce a top-of-range score no matter how many questions you get right in it. So the first 22 questions carry more weight than their share of the question count suggests, and accuracy there is worth more than speed heroics later.
Practically, that argues for a deliberate first module: read carefully, use the calculator to check rather than to rush, and do not leave easy marks behind while chasing a hard question. The instinct to “save time for the end” is the wrong instinct on an adaptive test.
Only 40 of the 44 questions count
Each module contains 20 operational questions that count toward your score and 2 pretest questions that do not. College Board uses pretest items to trial questions for future tests.
There is no reliable way to identify them. They are not marked, not grouped at the end, and not systematically harder or stranger. The only sane response is to treat all 44 as if they count, which is what the design intends. Students who convince themselves a difficult question was “probably experimental” tend to be wrong, and the belief costs them the marks twice over: once on the question, once on the confidence.
Why you never leave a blank
There is no deduction for a wrong answer on the SAT. A wrong answer and a blank score identically — zero — which means an unanswered question is a guess you declined to make for free.
This is worth stating plainly because it is the opposite of the rule on the Bocconi admissions test, where a wrong answer costs 0.2 marks and a considered blank is sometimes correct. Students preparing for both in the same year have to hold two contradictory habits, and under pressure the wrong one surfaces. If you are sitting both, drill the difference deliberately rather than assuming you will remember it on the day.
The practical rule for the SAT: with two minutes left, make sure every question has something in it. Eliminate what you can, then commit.
Where the marks actually are
The 40 scored questions are drawn from four content areas, and the distribution is public:
- Algebra — 13 to 15 questions. Linear equations and inequalities, systems, linear functions and their graphs.
- Advanced Math — 13 to 15 questions. Quadratics, polynomials, exponentials, radicals, rational expressions and nonlinear systems.
- Problem-Solving and Data Analysis — 5 to 7 questions. Ratios, rates, percentages, probability, and reading data from tables and graphs.
- Geometry and Trigonometry — 5 to 7 questions. Area and volume, lines and angles, triangles, right-triangle trigonometry and circles.
Algebra and Advanced Math together are roughly three quarters of the section. A student who is shaky on quadratics and functions is losing marks in the largest pool on the paper, which is where preparation should start — not with the geometry that feels less familiar but accounts for far fewer questions.
The calculator is allowed the whole time, and that changes things
A calculator is permitted on the entire Math section, and a Desmos graphing calculator is built into the Bluebook testing app. You may bring your own approved calculator as well. A formula reference sheet stays on screen throughout.
Fluency with the built-in Desmos is worth real marks, and most students underuse it. Graphing both sides of an equation to find intersections, solving systems visually, and checking a factorisation are all faster than the algebra in many cases. The time to learn it is during preparation, not in the exam, because hunting for a feature under time pressure costs more than the algebra would have.
How to prepare, in order
- Diagnose by content area first. Four areas, two of which carry three quarters of the marks. Find out which is leaking marks before doing anything else.
- Fix accuracy before speed. On an adaptive test, early accuracy sets your ceiling. Rushing the first module to bank time is actively counterproductive.
- Practise on Bluebook. College Board provides free official full-length adaptive practice tests in the same app you will sit the real test in. Third-party practice cannot reproduce the routing.
- Build the never-blank habit. Make it automatic in practice so it survives the pressure of the real thing.
