SAT maths prep, the section you can actually move.

The Digital SAT Math section is 44 questions in 70 minutes, split into two modules — and the second gets harder or easier depending on how the first went. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so every blank you leave is a mark you gave away for nothing.

What the Math section is

Format
44 questions in 70 minutes, split into two modules of 22 questions and 35 minutes each — roughly 95 seconds a question. The whole test is taken digitally in College Board's Bluebook app.
Adaptive by module
How you perform on the first module decides the difficulty of the second. The harder second module is what gives access to the top of the scale, so early accuracy matters more than it looks.
Question types
About three quarters are multiple choice with four options. The rest are student-produced responses: you type the answer yourself, with no options to work backwards from.
Scoring
Math is scored 200–800 and is exactly half of the 1600 total. The Reading and Writing section supplies the other half.
Calculator
Allowed on the entire Math section, with a Desmos graphing calculator built into Bluebook. A reference sheet of formulas is provided on screen.

What the maths actually covers

Algebra
13–15 questions. Linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, linear functions and their graphs.
Advanced Math
13–15 questions. Quadratics, polynomials, exponentials, radicals, rational expressions and nonlinear systems.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
5–7 questions. Ratios, rates, proportions, percentages, probability, and reading data from tables, scatterplots and graphs.
Geometry and Trigonometry
5–7 questions. Area and volume, lines and angles, triangles, right-triangle trigonometry and circles.

Scoring, and why you never leave a blank

The arithmetic
A correct answer adds to your raw score, a wrong answer costs nothing, and a blank costs exactly the same as a wrong answer. There is no deduction for guessing, so there is never a reason to leave a question unanswered.
How that differs from Bocconi
This is the opposite of the Bocconi admissions test, where a wrong answer costs 0.2 marks and a considered blank is sometimes the right play. Students preparing for both need to hold two different rules in their head.
Where marks are really lost
Rarely on the hardest questions. Far more often on mid-difficulty algebra done at speed, on misreading what a question asks for, and on arithmetic slips that a calculator would have caught.

Timing, attempts and when to sit it

Pacing
About 95 seconds a question, but the questions are not evenly weighted in time. Short algebra items need to be banked quickly to leave room for the multi-step ones.
Attempts
You can retake the SAT, and most students sit it two or three times. Universities differ on whether they superscore across sittings, so check each one rather than assuming.
Typical timing
Many international-school students sit it in the spring of Year 12 and keep an autumn date in reserve, which keeps it clear of the IB exam period.

How many questions is the SAT Math section?

Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the SAT?

No. A wrong answer scores the same as a blank, which means there is never a reason to leave a question unanswered. Guess on anything you cannot finish. What does it mean that the Digital SAT is adaptive?

The Math section is adaptive between its two modules. Everyone sits the same first module; how you do on it determines whether the second module is the easier or the harder version. The harder second module is what gives access to the top of the score range, so accuracy in the first 22 questions carries more weight than the raw question count suggests.
Can you use a calculator on the whole SAT Math section?

Yes. The Digital SAT allows a calculator on the entire Math section, and a Desmos graphing calculator is built into the Bluebook testing app. You may also bring your own approved calculator. A formula reference sheet is available on screen throughout.
What maths topics are on the Digital SAT?

Four content areas. Algebra is 13–15 questions: linear equations, inequalities and systems. Advanced Math is another 13–15: quadratics, polynomials, exponentials and nonlinear systems. Problem-Solving and Data Analysis is 5–7: ratios, percentages, probability and data interpretation. Is the SAT easier than the Bocconi test?

They are different rather than simply easier or harder. The SAT gives you about 95 seconds a question with no wrong-answer penalty and a calculator throughout. The Bocconi test gives you about 90 seconds, deducts 0.2 for a wrong answer, and packs 24 maths questions into 50. Bocconi accepts SAT scores as an alternative to its own test, so sitting both and submitting the stronger result is a legitimate strategy.
Can a tutor help with SAT maths?

Yes, and the maths section is the more teachable half of the test. Unlike Reading and Writing, the content is a finite and published list, and College Board provides free official practice through Bluebook and Khan Academy. What one-to-one work adds is diagnosis — finding which of the four content areas is actually costing you marks — and then drilling pace, calculator use and the habit of never leaving a blank until they are automatic.
